On view now through May in the Collection Gallery is “Birds Love Spring” a tribute to the annual migration of Sandhill Cranes. Works on display are a group of museum and private collection paintings, photographs and sculpture. Nationally recognized wildlife artists in the show include Robert Bateman, Michael Forsberg, Thomas Mangelsen and Russ Duerksen.

“Birds Love Spring” pays tribute to the phenomenon of mass avian migration. Sandhill Cranes stop for four to six weeks in the wetlands and fields along the Platte River on their way to Canada. Not all artists have captured these dynamic animals in the same way. Several of the photographs by Michael Forsberg address aspects of conservation, with images about special tactics scientists are using to increase the populations of these birds. Other artworks in the exhibition are domesticated birds like ducks and chickens.

Wildlife plays an important role in the agrarian landscape. The return of birds to our landscapes is a hopeful sign that spring is on the way.

Carol Ann Kobza became the Director / Arts Administrator for Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art in October. This new role is designed to help the museum and its Board of Directors increase the museum’s reach and visibility in the David City area and nationally. She will support the Board and oversee the museum’s membership development, educational programs and fundraising events.

Carol Ann has spent two decades fostering creativity in organizations as diverse as Hallmark Cards, Inc. and U. S. Central Federal Corporate Credit Union. At Hallmark she served as art director, innovation team leader, and idea manager, leading teams of executives and staff to develop new products and new brands. She developed and facilitated a program of interactive workshops on creativity and innovation for Hallmark employees. She was also Vice President of Research and Innovation at U.S. Central Federal Corporate Credit Union, prior to becoming a financial advisor and founding her creativity development and advisory business called KOBZA.

Her work with Bone Creek Museum draws on Carol Ann’s experience early in her career as an arts administrator developing performing and visual arts programs for the Kearney Area Arts Council, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Kimball Hall and the National Endowment for the Arts. Carol Ann worked as the part-time administrator for Butler County Arts Council in the Council’s early years.

Carol Ann says, “I have a great fondness for David City and a passion for art and the land. My family is there. I grew up on a farm owned by the Martin family, which is the first homestead in Butler County with a once beautiful, hand-crafted, historic barn. Although I have been away from Nebraska for years, I still consider myself a Nebraskan and member of the David City community.”

Carol Ann will work remotely from the Kansas City area in order to continue to connect with a regional and national network of people involved in the arts.

Sunday, AUGUST, 2013, TBA

Our first year event, August 2009 saw a great turn out for our kickoff event with featured poets; Poet Laureate Ted Kooser, published author Twyla Hansen, and local poet Leo Kovar.

The second annual event, in 2010, welcomed Marge Saiser to join returning poets, Ted Kooser and Twyla Hansen. The theme of this event revolves around the agrarian subject. Guests were moved to tears over the beautiful combination of spoken word and fine art, in a great setting. This event gives visitors an opportunity to reflect on the changing landscape and be inspired by such appreciation and reverence for the land and those who cultivate it. Interested poets are encouraged to contact the museum for more information about the event.

The third annual event in 2011 featured with poetry readings from Twyla Hansen, JV Brummels, and Leo Kovar, celebrating agrarianism and artistic expression with two great returning poets from previous years and a Nebraska poet new to the Bone Creek stage.

The 2012 fourth annual event featured the reading of Twyla Hansen from her new book Dirt Songs: A Plains Duet written with Linda Hasslestrom. Joined by Hansen were friends Dwaine Spieker and Barbara Schmitz.
