Tim Peterson’s Deer Chaser was announced as Best Representational on Sept. 28 in the juried exhibition from the Rapid City-based group, Artists of the Black Hills, on display in
the North 40 gallery.
Sheldon Art Museum curator Brandon Ruud presented awards to three artists for their work. Along with recognizing Peterson, Ruud selected Ray Tsydal’s Champagne in the Creek Bottom to receive an award for Best Conceptual. Honorable Mention went to Becky Grismer for her Figure with River Rock.
Mick Harrison, Jan Sohl, Jenny Braig, Kevin Haller, Becky Grismer, Tim Peterson, Nicola Meeks, Jon Crane, Dorothy Snowden, Lynn Thorpe, Anna Achtziger, Bill Feterl, James Pollock, Sandy Newman, BJ Stych, Ray Tysdal, Steve Babbitt, and Nancy Bowman are the members of Artists of the Black Hills (ABH) whose work was selected to be in Bone Creek’s exhibition.
Sponsors for the reception and awards included: Bank of the Valley; Cornerstone Bank; Dale’s Food Price and Moravec Financial Advisors, Inc.
Membership in the Artists of the Black Hills is open to those artists whose work demonstrates a consistently superior level of competence in their chosen medium. Residency in the Black Hills region is not a requirement for membership but a history of a presence in the area through gallery or museum showings, or other public installations is necessary.
The artists represented in this show all share a history of gallery or museum showings as well as honors and awards.
The exhibition will feature a wide variety of media and styles but all the images are of agrarian themes. Media included: Acrylics, Jewelry, Mixed Media, Oils, Pastels, Photography, Print Making, Etching, Sculpture, and Watercolor.
Art in the Black Hills is as diverse as the geography and the climate. The work, both traditional and contemporary, is rooted in the artists’ common sense of place. The exhibition will help Bone Creek fulfill its mission of connecting people to the land through art.
